Jagadodharana - A haunting Tune

Purandara Dasa's  (1484-1564) composition about how Yashoda innocently treats Krishna as a baby without knowing He is the Master Himself, is a masterpiece. The Melody captures the emotions completely. A great song even if you dont understand the words (in kannada)!

Ayurveda: Art of Being

This is a fantastic movie by movie maker Nalin Pan. He goes deep into the villages of India to film ayurvedic healing techniques. This knowledge of healing is fast vanishing and all i see is that its practitioners are either trying to rubbish allopathic medicine as all evil or try to explain ayurveda in a scientific way. Both fail. Information that is unstructured is useless. What is fascinating to me personally is all the ayurvedic practices are embedded in the tridosha theory.  So, as with any theory, it should be able to help predict and come up with new ways of healing based on this theoritical model.

Namaste

Predictably Irrational: Dan Ariely

Works like this one by Dan Ariely shows us the extent to which we are not in control of ourselves. This illusion of control is one of the major insights of indian thinkers. But for the last few centuries, indian thought has been derided  by western scholarship as world-denying and pretty much worthless. It reminds me of Albiruni, who commenting on indian number system said, we were foolishly obsessed with big numbers when all man needed was a system of counting till one thousand.

Dan Ariely in this talk,  explains the concept of cognitive bias with remarkable examples.

Constantine's Sword

A Film by James Carroll, Constantine's Sword describes how chritianity as an ideology has been used by christian west for military purposes just like Islam has been used.

The Black Swan

This is a must read book! In Bhagavat Gita Ch18.13-14, Krishna speaks of five partial causes one of which is Daiva or the unknown/unpredictable causes. This book shows you how a lot of western historical narrative or even economic theorizing is just a load of crap. Yet we cling to these theories even when they have been shown wrong by reality. Enjoy the talk!
