Season6: Bhagavat Gita Part10

In this class, we learn slokas 42-45. Krishna had already explained previously that one should come to conclusions only based on valid sources of knowledge ie, One's own experience (pratyaksha), Inference (anumana) and Shruti (aagama). Experience unguided by shruti is useless and inference by itself is wild. So when all these come togeather, we reach right conclusions.

In slokas 42-45 Krishna now explains what happens when Shruti is unaided by ecperience. All we get is knowledge without depth (of experience). Krishna asks arjuna (and indirectly us) to rise above this triviality if we seek happiness and balance in life.

wiIn this class, we learn about the applications of Samkhya into practice through life strategies called"Yoga". In the Gita, Samkhya means knowledge of the Self (both Individual and Supreme) and Yoga means Strategies. The important aspects we learnt in Samkhya were -
  • We are not our bodies or anything that changes -> This is to Externalization as a problem solving strategy
  • Jiva is Eternal -> implies everything around us changes. How do we handle change?
  • Jiva is not an independent actor -> What motivates our actions?

Good-Bye Euclid

This is a recording of C.K.Raju's lecture on his work on history of mathematics. This is a part of decolonizing our universities initiative of Multiveristy. This talk is interesting to me because it gives all the proofs necessary to say Euclid did not actually exist. It also opens our eyes to the double standards that is prevalent in nature of accepted evidence. This is not for the faint of the heart. Also ignore the comment of the lady towards the end...

Decolonizing our Universities

Prof. C.K.Raju's work fascinates me. I think i get a lot of things he is talking about but a long way away from understanding the math and science behind it. But if what he says is true, relearning calculus would be amazing. The essential point of is talk is science and math as we do it today is infused with a lot of metaphysics. Indian did math as number crunching only. On the face of it, it is hard to believe that the things we take for granted is not as straight forward as we think it is...
